Silk Tie Easter Eggs

Friday night was my monthly scrapbooking club night. Our founder Jodie brought in her Silk Tie Easter Eggs to show us and to demonstrate how to make them. You need 100% silk ties that you can find at Goodwill, garage sales, or maybe old ones in your Husbands closet. I took my egg home and my Daughter was definitely interested in trying this technique so I thought I would share how we made them.

You will need:

Eggs

100% Silk Tie

Vinegar

Stainless steel or aluminum pot (use one you do not care about as the dye may stain the pot. I used a pot I only make soap with).

Duct Tape or Pipe Cleaners

Cut your tie apart.

Cut a piece of fabric that fits around the egg.

Get the fabric good and tight around the egg.

Secure the back with a small piece of duct tape.

Twist the ends and again secure with a small piece of duct tape. Make sure the duct tape is covering just a little of the egg.

You can also tie with string or use pipe cleaners. I just found the duct tape to be fast and easy.

Place in a stainless or enamel pot with enough water to cover the eggs.

Add a few tablespoons of vinegar.

Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes.

Let cool and unwrap your egg.

Shine your egg with a little vegetable oil. These eggs are for display only, I would not eat.

Antique Dollar Store Tray

If you love the look of French market style distressed furniture and accessories than you will love working with Annie Sloan chalk paint. Over the weekend I took a class on painting and distressing furniture using this type of chalk paint. I had wanted to start painting some furniture and I had read reviews that her paint was very easy to use. I headed over to The Little Black Chair in Littleton, Colorado www.thelittleblackchair.net where I took the three hour class. In those few hours I learned six different distressing techniques. The paint is absolutely wonderful to use. It has virtually no odor, there is no priming required, and it dries very fast. You can paint indoors which is fabulous. The only prep work you need to do is if you are working with metal (furniture hardware for example) you need to do a quick sanding, or if your furniture is very greasy you will need to clean it first with TSP. The beauty of this paint is really in the finishing wax. You need to purchase the wax in order to harden the paint and create the aging effects. It is a bit of investment at first but the paint goes a long way and I was told you can get up to 3 dressers from the 32 OZ container. I wanted to try a few small projects with the paint before I tackled my first big project so I started with this tray from the dollar store. You can use this same technique I am showing you on furniture. I will be sharing some more fun projects using this paint. To make this tray you will need:

Metal Tray (I found mine at The Dollar Tree, I have a link at the bottom of the page if there is not one near you).

Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint (for retailers www.anniesloan.com, or online www.thelittleblackchair.net).

Annie Sloan Soft Wax in Clear

Annie Sloan Soft Wax in Dark

Paint Brushes (I used 1 1/2" to paint, and 2" for wax).

Brush for Wax

Cheesecloth

Sandpaper (I used 250 but any medium or fine paper will work).

Mineral Spirits (for cleaning the wax off the brush).

Take a small piece of sand paper and do a quick sanding on the tray. I just lightly buffed it with the sandpaper.

Paint one coat of Annie Sloan Old White paint. Let dry.

Paint a second coat of Old White if needed. (My tray needed two coats).

Take a piece of sand paper and gently rub the raised areas on the tray. Try to distress what areas would naturally wear off the tray (don't sand all over).

Take a small blob of clear wax and a small blob of dark wax and put them onto a paper plate or paint tray.

Using your brush apply the clear wax by dabbing it into the wax and rubbing it all over the tray, pressing the wax into the crevices. Put on a very light amount of wax. It shouldn't be thick.

Wipe the tray well with cheesecloth to smooth out the wax. You will notice the piece will start to look totally different once the wax is applied. It goes from very chalky to a hardened paint look finish.

Next use a different brush to apply the dark wax into the cervices on the tray. Depending on how "aged" you want your tray decide if you want to apply the dark wax all over, or just in the crevices. I used it all over on mine but went a little heavier into the raised areas.

Rub well with the cheesecloth to smooth and buff the wax.

Now apply a last layer of the Clear Wax and rub well with cheesecloth.

Wash your paint brush with water. Clean your wax brush by soaking in some mineral spirits then rinse.

Egg Topiary

I am continuing the egg theme from the last post with an egg topiary. My inspiration comes from an egg topiary featured in the Williams and Sonoma Spring catalog. I really liked the look of the topiary and wanted to create my own version of it. I found the faux eggs at Hobby Lobby, however they only came in a pastel mix so I painted them blue. This is a step you can easily skip if you would rather have a pastel egg topiary. If you can find faux natural or blue eggs even better so you do not have to bother painting. You can easily create this topiary and have it out all Spring to enjoy.

For this project you will need:

Styrofoam Florists Cone (mine is from Michael's sized 98mmx301mm)

Faux Eggs-small and regular sized eggs (I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby, I used 2 small packs of regular sized eggs, and 2 small bags of small eggs)

Moss (I picked up my bag at Dollar Tee)

Hot Glue Gun

Container or flower pot for the topiary

If you would like to paint your eggs you will need:

Acrylic paint in Light Blue/aqua (I used Folk Art brand Sky Blue)

Acrylic paint in Brown.

Paint brush (small and regular)

To start decide if you would like your eggs the color they are, or if you would like to paint them blue.

If you would like them blue like mine, lay them on one side or prop in a container and paint one side at a time with the blue paint and regular sized brush.

Let Dry before flipping and painting the other side.

To create the speckles mix some brown acrylic paint with water so the paint is thin a drippy.

Dab some brown paint onto your small paint brush. Make sure you are working outside or an area where paint can splatter (or cover the area well with paper towels). Holding the brush about a foot and a half over the eggs take your free hand and firmly tap on your hand holding the paint brush to create a spray of speckles onto the eggs.

If you get too big of a brown paint blob just paint over it in blue when dry.

Create the Topiary:

Start by removing approximately 2" of the top of the florist cone so that it isn't so pointy. You can use a knife to slice the tip off.

Hot glue one of the regular sized eggs onto the top of the cone. The glue takes a minute to set so hold onto the egg until it stays put.

Then start hot gluing a couple rows of the smaller eggs near the top of the topiary. Place them randomly with space in between them.

Continue attaching eggs down the topiary again randomly gluing regular sized ones with some small ones in between.

Don't glue the eggs too tightly together as we will be filling the gaps with moss.

Once completed gluing all your eggs on the topiary start to fill the gaps with moss.

Make sure you put your topiary on a piece of newspaper or paper towel as the moss is messy.

Fill in a gap between the eggs with hot glue.

Immediately push a small clump of moss into the hot glue and use the back of a paint brush or a stick to press the moss firmly into the hot glue.

Fill in all the gaps with moss and put your topiary into a pot of your choice. If you see any brown paint spots you don't like just touch them up with blue paint.

Easy Apothecary Pedestals

Todays fast and easy project inspiration comes from Tami over at Dollar Store Decor. She created mini apothecary display jars gluing dollar store glass candle holders onto candlesticks. I loved the simplicity of this project but I wanted to create a bigger display so I purchased a glass hurricane for my candlestick at Michael's. For under $5 with coupon, I turned a cast off candlestick into a pedestal apothecary display. It was so simple I will definitely be making another taller one for a pair. Fill them with seasonal items for a nice buffet or kitchen island display. Thanks Tami!

For This Project You Will Need:

Candle stick (recycle one you no longer love)

Glass Hurricane (I purchased mine at Michael's)

E6000 Glue or Gorilla Krazy Glue

Take your candle stick to the craft store and find a hurricane jar that fits nicely atop your candle stick.

Apply E6000 Glue along the base where the hurricane comes into contact with the candle holder.

Let dry over night. The glue will definitely take all night to set.

Fill your new display piece with seasonal items. I used moss from the dollar store and some faux eggs. Attach a ribbon if desired.

Abraham Lincoln Printable

In honor of Presidents Day I thought I would make a 5x7 print of one of my favorite Abraham Lincoln quotes. I think it is a great reminder that we are all human and none of us is perfect. What is your vice? Chocolate? nightly glass of wine? shoes? craft supplies? My biggest is definitely Starbucks. Rarely a day goes by that I don't stop for a venti vanilla soy latte, sometimes even two. At over $4 a piece I know it is a total waste of money (especially since I have an espresso maker at home). It is my weakness but like good old Abe says if you don't have a little fun you are probably no fun to be around.

Easy Chunky Cuff Bracelets

I am so amazed by all of the large pendants at Michael's. I used them for our Shabby Chic Napkin Rings and now I am making bracelets out of them. I especially love big cuff bracelets, and since Michael's also sells plain cuff bracelets I thought I would add my favorite pendant choices to them to create a nice chunky cuff for under ten dollars. Make them for yourself, or make them to give. Cuff bracelets are nice jewelry gifts since they can be adjusted to fit just about any wrist size.

You will need:

Cuff (Find in the jewelry section at Michael's). You can also find $3 ones under the "Supplies" section on Etsy.

Large Pendant (I found both of mine at Michael's. I love their new enamel line where I found the daisy).

Gorilla Glue Krazy Glue, or JB Weld Glue

Wire Snips

Emory board or sand paper (depending on where the bale is this may not be needed).

Refer to our project Shabby Chic Napkin Rings on how to remove bales from your pendants. Click on the link for instruction: http://craftingrebellion.blogspot.com/2012/01/shabby-chic-napkin-rings.html

After you have removed the bale from the pendant apply a liberal amount of Gorilla Glue or J B Weld glue to the top of the cuff and the bottom of the pendant.

*You can glue onto the round base on the top of the cuff or you can pop it off with pliers and glue right onto the band.

Hold in place for a minute or two until set. Prop up.

Let dry 24 hours.

Valentine's Day Crazy Clips

Yesterday was my monthly scrapbook club crop and we have such a great bunch of talented and awesome women that come to it! One of them is Rhiannon Metzger (super sweet). Yesterday she was making Valentine's Crazy Clips during the crop and I was so in love with them! I asked her if I could share them with you since they are a fast project that could still be made by Tuesday. Rhiannon made our Holiday Crazy Clips and her family loved them so much they asked her to make Valentine's ones to give as gifts. She used the Michael's glitter tape and found the puffy felt stickers on sale there as well. There definitely is still time to whip up these adorable little gifts. Triple Heart Card

My friend Laura Sampson sent me this cute Valentine's Day card so I thought I would share it with you since it is fast and easy to make. You need a heart punch, or a cutting machine to cut equal sized hearts. You stagger them on the card and attach with pop dots. She embossed the paper on the middle heart and added a small adhesive gem. Stamp "All you need is Love" on an angle.

Here are the specific hearts and stamp she used so you can easily create your own version:

The stamp is Hampton Art Rubber Stamp - All You Need is Love
# 8590820 from Joanns.

The heart is Sizzix Heart Set #2 model #656764.

The patterned paper is from the "all dressed up" glitter mat stack by DCWV.

These cards were so easy to make that she made a bunch!

$5 Designer Look Curtains

I recently saw a pair of designer curtains with hand sewn crystals and I loved how glamorous they appeared. They were beyond expensive. I knew I wanted to try an inexpensive version of this technique. I was recently at Hobby Lobby and a long strand of faux crystal wedding garland caught my eye. At $5 (half off that week) I decided I would give this project a try. One strand will cover at least one regular curtain panel. How many crystals you use is up to you. Since the crystals are big I actually think I could have used less and spread them out more. I had some crystals left over on my long length 95" panel. Now I am not a big fan of hand sewing, but if I can do this project I think anyone can. It just requires a little patience. It took me one evening (while watching TV) to complete one panel. I have no idea how these curtains will do when they need dry cleaning. I seriously change my decor before my curtains usually need cleaning! But at an investment of $5 (not including the curtains) I wasn't too concerned. I really like this idea for a couture baby room, but really any room you want some bling in could work. This pair will be going into my spare bedroom, but I think I will be keeping my eye out for interesting crystal garland to make another pair for my dining room. This project is a really inexpensive way to change the look of regular store bought curtains into something special.

For this project you will need :

Curtains

Wedding Crystal Garland (I got mine for $5 at Hobby Lobby but you can google wedding garland and you will find lots of choices. Just make sure the crystals are tied on (not glued) to the line so you can remove them.

Scissors

Needle and Thread

Start by removing the crystals from the line. A small pair of scissors in helpful.

Lay out your curtain panel and place the crystals where you like them.

I staggered my crystals so four were on one row, three the next.

Mark the desired area with either a pin or a pen mark.

Sew on the crystals like sewing on a button. I started by locking my thread, then secured the top of the crystal. Then I ran the thread behind the crystal and secured the bottom. It will take a few hours to hand sew a large panel. This is a good TV or movie project.

Fast and Easy Damask Frame

I'm in redecorating mode for our master bedroom going from a brown color scheme to black and white and gray. I was reframing some photos and had some wrapping paper from Michael's. One thing led to another and this frame was created. All you need is a large frame and wrapping paper to make yourself one. I'm sure the idea came to me because I saw this great project http://alifedesigned.blogspot.com/2012/01/what-to-do-with-thrift-store-frames.html using wrapping paper as baby room artwork. I used the same concept except I turned mine into a photo frame. There are so many wonderful wrapping paper choices available to make your own custom looking frame. Plus you still have plenty of paper leftover to wrap presents. Its a win win!

You Will Need:

16x20 frame (or any other large frame without a mat)

Wrapping Paper (mine is a damask print purchased at Michael's)

Scissors

Tape

Take the cardboard backing out of the frame.

Cut a sheet of wrapping paper slightly bigger than the cardboard.

Wrap the backing just like you would wrap a present.

Center your photograph or artwork and adhere with double stick tape. I attached my photo slightly above center.

Roaring 20's Inspired Headband

Feather headbands and head wraps are big fashion right now. Both the flapper influenced headbands, and the hippie style head wraps. I decided I would try making a flapper inspired headband and the project turned out to be pretty easy. You need a headband, a feather pad, and an optional embellishment. I don't often wear headbands but I am surprised how glamourous these look on. For very little money you can have an eye catching headband that would look equally great with a cocktail dress, or jeans. I think they would also be beautiful on bridesmaids. I really love the flapper look. After all those women were the original rebels!

For this project you will need:

Headband ($1 store)

Feather pad (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or fly fishing stores).

Embellishments (optional) Pendants with bale removed (see Shabby Chic Napkin Rings for how to remove bales), silk flowers, acrylic gems, buttons etc.
Make sure the embellishments are not heavy or they will pull away from the feathers. I used 40% off pendants from Michaels for these headbands. A fancy button would also work nicely.

E6000 Glue or Hot Glue. The fabric backed feathers worked well with E6000, but the natural backed feathers worked better with hot glue. You will have to experiment with glues to see what works best with your feathers.

Attach your feather pad to your headband about 1-2" above the bottom of the band. Add glue along the headband the distance of the feathers.

Center the pad in place while drying.

The material backed feathers adhered quickly and the headband only needed propping up to dry, while the natural back feathers needed clipping to dry. Attach clips to hold in place if needed.

After the feather pad has dried to the headband attach your embellishment with E6000 glue. Use a light weight embellishment. If it is heavy you may have to wire wrap it to the headband. I used pendants with the bales removed.

Hair Bow Picture Frames

I am currently in redecorating mode for my master bedroom. I went shopping at Hobby Lobby for a couple new frames and naturally I was drawn to the frames with embellishments. Of course they were more money than the plain frames, but frankly some of the embellishments looked a little cheap. At the same time I was amazed by all the hair bows I have been seeing at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I especially like the bows with feathers. So I purchased some of the bows and with my glue gun gave the frames that little glam I liked. They were less money than the embellished ones, but looked higher quality. This is such an easy project that maybe you have done it already? For those of you who haven't, take a look at your frames. Could they use a little pizazz? Check out craft shows, and craft stores for pouffy hair bows that would look great with your color scheme. Maybe you have leftover hair bows your daughter has outgrown? My leopard bow frame is just that. Combine your bow frames with some rhinestone or other fancy frames for a fun boutique look.

For this project you will need:

Picture Frames

Hair Bows (I found most in the hair bow section at Hobby Lobby but the fluffy feather ones are from the wedding area. Most cost between $3.99-5.99 so bring your 40% coupon available online).

Silk Flowers (optional)

Hot Glue Gun

Find some hair bows that work with your decorating scheme and look good on your frame.

Figure out where you want to add the hair bow. (Side, Middle or Bottom of the frame).

Find out which direction you like your hair bow placed. (angle, straight on).

Make sure you check that the angle of the clip looks good before you glue it on. Some clips are top heavy so in order for the clip to lay flat you will need to glue the heavier end toward the top of the frame.

If your hair bow has flat ends like the clip shown here, add hot glue to the flat part of the clip and affix to your frame.

Add a couple silk flowers with the hair bows (optional).

If your hair bow has a lot of detail on the back (for example it is also a pin), add a large glob of hot glue to the frame and press the pin and clip backing into the hot glue.

Knuckle Clutch Knock Off

I love Alexander McQueen Knuckle clutches, but at $1,200 and up I would need a lot more disposable income in order to buy one. Instead I decided I would try making a knock off version. I originally set out looking for 4 rings, or a nice knuckle ring set to glue on a clutch. Unfortunately I found the rings I liked cost more than purchasing a pre made purse form from the Etsy supplies section. There are several purse forms to choose from. Mine came to $25 after the shipping costs. This is not a cheap project by any means, but the knock offs for sale on Etsy are well over $100. I decided I would spend the $25 because I really wanted this style clutch. The project is very easy to do, you just need to cover your purse form with fabric. I used leopard upholstery fabric that I had leftover from recovering my kitchen stools. I may try another with faux snakeskin or leather. That is the great thing about using a purse form, I can easily recover it when I want a new look. The only negative is the rings on this form are not real big. If you have fairly normal sized hands the form should be OK. If you have big knuckles, or larger hands fret not, you can still make a McQueen knock off. Just purchase the single skull head clutch form instead of the knuckle form. Then go buy a pair of fabulous shoes with the $1, 175.00 you just saved.

For this clutch you will need:

Metal Purse Form: I purchased mine at Princess Young's from Etsy.

Fabric

Hot glue or other glue that will adhere fabric to plastic

Scissors

Pliers

The purse form comes in 3 parts. A metal frame and two plastic purse shells that you will cover.

Take a purse shell and cut a piece of fabric larger than it.

Trim the fabric to fit just inside the shell. Glue the two long sides.

Clip your fabric in place if your glue is slow drying. If you use hot glue you wont need to do this.

Trim the extra fabric and glue the corner pieces by folding the fabric in and pulling it taught to get rid of most creases in the fabric.

Cut a piece of fabric to line the inside.

Turn the fabric under to hide the edge. Glue inside the purse to cover the outer fabric cover.

Again fold the corners in and under while gluing the inside cover.

Repeat the above steps with the other shell.

Snap the shells into the purse frame and push until good and tight.

You will need a pair of pliers to tighten the side and bottom bars on the frame that hold the shell in place.

Place a piece of fabric over the metal bars (to keep from scratching the metal) before squeezing them tight with the pliers.

Chinese Fortune Sticks

Happy Chinese New Year! It is the year of the dragon which is especially good for me since I have a large blue Chinese dragon tattooed on my back shoulder. Yes I am the girl with the dragon tattoo! I had it done before the height of popularity of the book, but it is pretty funny that Lisbeth Salander (the heroine) also has hers on the shoulder. In honor of the Chinese New Year I am making a set of Chinese Fortune Sticks. Who doesn't love a fortune? Chinese Fortune Sticks are a fun take on the cookie. You have 50 numbered sticks. You draw a stick and read your corresponding fortune. If you have a party it is a fun conversation piece. Unlike cookies it can be left out and reused. Kids especially love pulling out and reading their fortune. All you need is a container to decorate (I made mine with a dollar store votive) and craft sticks. You can print out the sheet of fortunes I made for the project or go online and find ones you like. There are all sorts of fortune cookie fortunes on the internet. You can pick general, romantic, or funny. Just number the fortunes and use the same amount as your sticks. This is an easy project that even kids can do. It would make a fun Chinese New Year gift or group kids craft.

You will need:

Jar to decorate-Any container works as long as the craft sticks fit into it and can be pulled out easily. For this tutorial I used a large votive from the Dollar Tree Store, and a small jelly jar.

Scrapbook Paper or Fabric to line the inside of the jar

Craft Sticks- I used the thinner ones sized 4 1/2" x 3/8 ". You can also use the regular sized craft sticks and write the fortune directly onto the stick.

Ribbon and Charms (I found the Asian charms at Michael's in the clearance area where they are currently 70% off )

Marker

Determine how long to cut your paper by sliding it into the jar.

Mark the paper at the top of the jar. Remove and trim the paper about 1/2" shorter than the marked line so the paper will fit just below the top of the jar.

Use double stick tape or tape runner to tape your paper into a circle.

Put paper inside jar.

Decorate the jar with ribbon and charms.

If your charms are heavy hot glue the ribbon to the jar, or use a glue dot.

You can make a charm by using an earring wire. Add beads and then bend the top into a loop to attach to the bow. Or tie on the charms with thin ribbon.

Count out 50 craft sticks.

Number the sticks 1-50 on one side. Leave the other side of the stick unnumbered so the numbers are not seen from the top of the jar.

Print out fortune sheet.

Print out fortune#1. (1-25 fortunes)

Then run the paper back through the printer upside down to print on the reverse side fortune#2 (26-50)

Fold the paper and tuck inside the jar. You could also hand write fortunes to make a little decorative booklet.

Option 2: Use the wider Craft sticks and hand write fortunes directly onto the stick. Or print out the fortunes and tape runner onto the stick.

Distress Your sticks with Stayz On ink (optional).

Shabby Chic Napkin Rings

I love a fancy table and I love bling so I am excited to share this project with you. I wanted to make unique jewelry inspired napkin rings when I saw an artist transform antique broaches into them. The project proved too involved for me because broaches have so much hardware to remove and they were also soldered onto metal rings. I discovered a much easier, and faster way to create the same look using pendants and small curtain rod rings. Pendants are so much easier to find than broaches, and all you need to do is snip off a bale to prepare them. Start looking for ones you like at garage sales, thrift stores, and Michael's Crafts in the jewelry supplies section (I purchased mine there at 40% off). The recent trend in jewelry is very large pendants so you can easily find ones in excellent shape that are nice sized new or recently used. Think about one thing in common to tie your set together. All the same color metal, all owls, all crosses, or all antiqued for example. I chose all silver metal with bling. A set of these handmade rings combined with cloth napkins would make a brilliant house warming gift. I am still gathering more pendants, and I'm enjoying the search for ones that inspire me. I love that when I am finished each dinner plate on my table will have a unique look.

You will need:

Pendants -Look for nice large ones with a flat back. You can use curved backs but they are trickier to glue.

A pack of Small Wood Curtain Rings with an inner width of 1.25 " (for 3/4" rod) Buy the thicker rings about 1/4"+ thick (mine are about 1/3" wide)

I bought mine at Bed Bath & Beyond in the clearance bin for $3.99 for 7.

Wire cutters or jewelry snips

Emery Board or Sand Paper

Instant Krazy Glue, Gorilla Glue, or Jb Weld. You need instant krazy type glue that bonds metal and wood. Hot glue will not be strong enough.

Start by removing the curtain ring finding. Unscrew it by hand from the ring.

Choose nice sized pendants with smooth backs, or backs that have a flat enough area to glue. Smaller bales are best. Some have bales underneath the design which is even better because they will not need removing.

Remove the pendant bale by snipping it off with wire cutters, or jewelry snips.

File any rough edges left from removing the bale with an emery board or piece of sand paper.

Add a number of drops of Krazy Glue to the curtain ring OVER THE HOLE WHERE THE FINDING WAS REMOVED.

Add some more glue to the back of the pendant and center it onto the ring covering the hole at the same time.

Hold the ring in place while firmly pressing. After a few minutes of firm pressure prop up the ring so it stays straight and the pendant doesn't shift while drying.

Some pendants are OK drying upside down while others will need propping up to dry straight. I found a little plastic container that held mine in place while drying.

Let dry 24 hours. Because of the nature of gluing metal make sure to let dry the full time.

S.W.A.K. Note Cards

Sorry I am a bit delayed on my posts, I have been sick. I am finally starting to feel a little better, hurray! With Valentines Day approaching I thought I would make some fun Valentines inspired note cards. I designed them so you will get two cards out of an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Print using plain white card stock. I like 80 or 100 lb smooth finish paper for a nice firm card. You can find card stock at XpedX, Staples or Office Depot. Or just cut your 12x12 scrapbooking card stock down to 8 1/2 x 11 size. Add a zebra or leopard print pen and you'll have a great girlfriend gift. It is fast and easy to print a bunch of note card sets in just one evening!

You will need:

Plain white regular letter size card stock. I like 80-100lb weight.

Plain white invitation sized envelopes. Walmart sells a box of 100 for only a few dollars.

Paper cutter

Pen (optional) I found a pack of 10 animal print pens at Staples for $4 & Ribbon (optional)

Choose your favorite color,or mix and match.

Print out the design on heavy white card stock. Set your printer to the highest resolution possible. Also set your printer to use heavy paper, or cover weight paper if it allows you select.

Cut your sheet of paper exactly down the middle at 5 1/2"

Sometimes printers are slightly off and you may need to trim your edges a little more if needed.

Fold the notes in half using a bone folder or any other flat tool to get a crisp edge.

Include a leopard or zebra print pen for gift giving. Also add plain white envelopes.

Tie up your note cards with a bow or pack in a plastic baggie or plain stationery box.

Feel free to make for yourself, or gifts, just don't sell the design. Thanks!

Silhouette Battery Operated Candles

For those of you that have already tried our Vera Bradley Decoupage Battery Operated Candle Project, I found another great way to dress up battery operated candles...rub ons! That's right the rub ons you find in the scrapbooking aisle of craft stores work really well on them. Just choose any smooth finish battery operated candle (I used the Dollar Tree store ones). For this particular project I used Hambly Screen Prints brand "Family Portrait" Rub Ons sheet bought at Archivers Scrapbooking store. Add stick on gems and your battery operated candle has gone from plain to fab. This is a super easy project that anyone can try. The silhouette decals on the candles create a fabulous mood.

You will need:

Plain Smooth Finish Battery Operated Candles (I got mine from The Dollar Tree Store).

Scrapbooking Rub Ons (the Silhouettes are from the Hambly Screen Prints www.hambleyscreenprints.com)

Adhesive Gems (found in the scrapbooking area)

Scissors

Popsicle Stick or other smooth rubbing tool

Cut out the rub on decal.

Separate from the backing paper and line up on your candle.

Hold the decal in place while rubbing it onto the candle. The decal will become light in color when it is all applied. (you could also tape the decal down while rubbing, but I found holding it works ok).

Double check you have the entire design rubbed on by lifting a little off at a time. Fix any missed decal area by smoothing it back down and rubbing again.

Once applied gently smooth out any small wrinkles with your finger.

Apply adhesive gems if desired.

Any scrapbooking rub ons will create a
nice silhouette effect.

Dollar Store Favor Box Makeover

Happy new Year Rebel Crafters! I hope you all enjoyed your Holidays!

If you have a wedding shower, birthday, or bachelorette party coming up then this party favor makeover is a fun and inexpensive project. When I was at the dollar store I noticed a package of wedding dress party favor boxes. 10 for a dollar, what a deal! Good design is all around us, but sometimes the execution is not the greatest. In this case the dress boxes are pretty washed out, but again at 10 cents a piece I knew they had great potential. I took the package home and worked out how to easily make them over into fun, and eye catching party favors. All you need is scrapbook paper, some embellishments, and a spool of inexpensive pliable wire to make the mini hangers. This project is very similar to paper dolls, you get to "dress up" your boxes. Once made they could hold chocolates, almonds, mints, M&M's, little nail polish or a small gift. The dress theme possibilities are endless just by changing the paper style. Add tulle to the front of the dress and it could be a little girls princess dress. Use leopard print and hot pink for a bachelorette party, or shower. I made my boxes in a variety of papers so you could see how different they can look depending on the paper choice. They are fun, and easy to make. My 8 year old Daughter made a bunch!

You will need:

Wedding dress Favor Boxes (I found mine at the Dollar Tree store. They come 10 boxes for $1). I have the link to Dollar Tree at the bottom of the page but they also include the groom boxes online.

Scrapbook Paper

Spool of pliable inexpensive wire (I used what I had on hand so I am not sure of guage. Just look at the inexpensive wire in the jewelry section at the craft stores and find one that is thick enough to make a small hanger)

Embellishments of Your Choice (I used bling on a roll for the gem sashes, and ribbon flowers).

Taper Runner and Glue Dots

Thin ribbon to tie the box together (optional) you can use the sheer white ribbon that comes with the boxes.

Scissors

Wire Snip (optional, you can use scissors)

ColorBox Chalk Inkpad (optional) if you want to distress your box edges.

The "before" box...cute design but pale printing.

Start by opening your package of dress boxes. Take one out and cut off one of the dress sides.

This is now your "template" to cut the scrapbook paper dresses. (Remember you will need to use just one of the boxes to cut apart for the template when you figure your total favor boxes to buy).

Use the dress template and cut two pieces of scrapbook paper. I held my template and trimmed around it. You can be more precise and also trace the template onto the back of the paper.

Attach the scrapbook dress pieces with tape runner by matching them up to the dress on the box.

Distress your edges if you prefer. If you aren't totally exact, trim your excess edges.

If you want to get fancy you can also cut a top in a different paper, and attach. (I chose to keep it simple using a full dress).

Now create your wire hanger.

Cut a piece of pliable wire approximately 9" long.

Centering the wire bend the sides into a triangle at 2 1/2" wide.

Wrap the wire around at the top of the triangle. The wire is very soft so you do not need to use pliers.

Snip the extra from the wrapped end off with wire snips or scissors.

Bend the hook at the top and snip to the desired length. I smooth out the hanger to shape it with my fingers.

Put your dress box together and tie it shut with a ribbon of your choice. You can use the ribbon they provide, but I liked a longer piece of ribbon.

Now attach the wire hanger to the "inside" of the front of the dress box by putting some tape runner in the middle and bottom part of the hanger wire. Press onto the inside of the dress.

Have fun embellishing your dress to match your party theme. I cut little pieces of "Bling on a Roll" and stuck them to the front of the waist ribbon. I also added fabric flowers to some of the dresses using glue dots.

Make a batch of dresses in the same style and fill with candy, jordan almonds, mints, or other little treats.

Easy Paperwhite Gift

This week I am on vacation (at home) so I am posting very quick and easy projects. Since paperwhite bulbs are on sale now I thought they would make a fun hostess gift for january. A box will have 4-6 bulbs depending on the size. All you need to create a quick gift is a nice teacup or container. I found the teacups at the Goodwill store for .50 a piece. I also saw that Michael's has their holiday mercury glass votives at half off (they would also make pretty and inexpensive containers). Use the potting mix provided. A teacup will hold one to two bulbs. I added a little moss on top (you can pick up a bag at the dollar store). The bulbs will be blooming in a few weeks so you could also wait until then to bag them up. I just popped them into a clear bag and tied with a ribbon. I think they will look very cute when they are blooming!

"Today is a Gift" 5"x7" Printable

Easy Branch Dangles

I am pretty picky about handmade jewelry. I want the project to be easy to make, but be very wearable. I saw a pair of earrings like these on Pinterest and knew I could easily recreate them. Unfortunately no link was available to give credit to for the design idea. The pattern is really catching on though as I just saw a tutorial in a magazine for these. All you have to do to make them is be able to make a loop at the end of a head pin. That is it! You can whip out a bunch of these earrings in one evening and have them on hand for nice little gifts.

For this Project You will need:

8 Earring Flat Head Pins

One Pair of Earring Wires

8 Beads (I used all the same bead, but you can mix for a different look)

A pair of Jewelry pliers and Wire snips (my pliers have wire snips built in)

Decide how long you would like the dangles then cut off equal length off each head pin. For example the silver beaded earrings I cut off about 1/2". For the crystal beads I cut off about 1".

I cut one head pin then lined it up with the next one to cut instead of measuring and marking. You could also mark the spot on the head pin with a marker.

Add beads to each head pin.

Make a loop at the end of one head pin by bending the wire to one side then rolling the pliers up and outward and back to close.

Now slide the looped headpin through one of the headpins.

Make a loop at the end of the new second headpin.

Slide the second headpin through the another headpin.

Make a loop at the end of the third headpin and slide over the 4th headpin.

Put the other end of the fourth headpin through the earring wire and close a loop to attach it to the earring. Now just repeat for the second earring.

Try using different beads to vary the look do 3 or 5 dangles instead of 4.

Make a card for your earrings by cutting a piece of cardstock approximately 3" wide by 6" long. Fold the pattern side over and secure with a tape runner. Poke two holes at the top for the earrings. Attach some ribbon or a flower.

Rock Your Purse

If you have already "Rocked your iPhone", then you need to make a purse to match. The concept is exactly the same. You will need a plastic or metal surface to work on (rubbery surfaces do not work well with the glue). I found this little vintage style purse at Goodwill. The surface is hard vinyl. Look for similar type cases to use. Small plastic or metal make up cases, or train cases would be perfect. I would compare this project to knitting, cross stitch, or a puzzle. It will take you some time to complete (took about 3 times the iPhone case), but it is very easy to do. Even my 8 year old Daughter worked on it. In many ways this is most like doing a puzzle. It is fairly mindless work, requires your eye to pick out the right sized gems to fit into your working area, and is very satisfying when you are done. Plus it is a project that you can show off. Since using my iPhone cases I love when someone says "cool phone case" and I can proudly say "thanks I made it!" I am looking forward to seeing the response I get from the purse. I am just trying to decide what to bling next?....wallet, shoes, belt buckle?....we shall see!

For This Project You Will Need:

Hard Surface Purse (look at metal or plastic make up boxes, and train cases for example)

Flat Back Gems (You will need a lot of gems so buy the large wheel of gems $2.99 or the box of gems $4.99 at Michaels, or buy a bulk bag of gems off Etsy under "supplies".

Cabochons- I use all types of items for my big bling. I like the "Princess Gems" in the kid craft area. I also used buttons with the shanks removed, and adhesive "bling" stickers with the sticker backs removed. Look up "cabochons" in the "supplies" section of Etsy for 1000's of choices. I purchased the gem skulls and the large plastic roses on Etsy.

Gem Pick Up Tool

E6000 Glue (use a fresh tube so the glue is easy to work with)

Toothpicks

REFER to Rock Your iPhone Project to get started as it is the exact same concept.

Glue down all of your large cabochons to the top of your purse. Make sure you like the placement before drying. If they dry and you change your mind you can pry a gem off with a flat sharp knife.

Continue gluing all of your large cabochons over the purse. Again decide if you like the look before they dry. I decided to switch the lavender skull for a black one for example.

OK now the fill in starts. Put on your headphones and zone out while adding the small gems. Take a toothpick and spread out about 1" of glue onto the surface. Don't do more than 2" or 3"or the glue will dry too quickly.

Use your gem pick up tool to pick up and stick gems onto the glue.

Fill in the glue area and then take a look to make sure you like everything before moving on to another 1"or 2" area.

Continue on until your entire purse is covered to your liking.

I rotate small and big gems but that is up to you. You could use all the same size gems as well. Make it your own.

Once completed give your purse a good polish with a slightly damp cloth with water or windex. This will get off any glue strings and wax pencil that stuck to the gems. It will also make sure all of your gems were glued down securely. In case a gem pops off you can touch up.

Shoe Lover Note Card Set

If you know a shoe lover then it is not too late to make them a boxed set of our "Shoe Lover Note Cards" as a great handmade gift. This project is a perfect use for all those extra scraps of decorative paper, and fun embellishments you have stashed away. For this set I put the embellishments on the straps, however putting them on the toes looks cute too. You will refer to our project "Uptown Witch Shoe Cards" for the cutting instructions. Then just follow the step by step assembly below and you will be making pairs of shoe cards in no time flat. Consider customizing each card with a stamped saying. I would love a box of shoe cards, wouldn't you?

You will need:

Blank Folded Cards (I purchase sets from Michael's that come with envelopes)

Decorative Paper

Black Card Stock

Embellishments (brads, buttons, stick on gems, bows etc.)

Tape Runner

Glue Dots (optional) for attaching embellishments

Refer to "Uptown Witch Shoe Card Project" for shoe shapes cutting info.

Make a shoe base and insole template out of cardstock. Use the template to cut around the shoe pieces.

Cut two shoe bases and attach to your blank note card.

Cut two insoles. For this shoe I rounded the one end of the insole forward.

Attach to the shoe insole with tape runner.

Cut out two straps and attach with tape runner or glue dots.

Choose two embellishments and glue dot to the strap or the toe of the shoe.

Make a set of 4 or 6 note cards in various patterned paper and box for gift giving. XpedX or Clearbags.com have great inexpensive note card boxes. Or tie your card set with a beautiful bow.

Have some fun and make seasonal shoes. Use holly, candy , or wreath stickers for the embellishments. Consider making a "4 Seasons" set of shoe cards.

Popcorn Tins Reborn

Hey wait this isn't a rockin' accessory project? Ok I admit am a little behind on that project, but its the holidays so you know how that goes! In the meantime I have a fun and useful recycling decoupage project to share with you. Do you receive tins of popcorn for gifts during the holidays? If so turn the leftover tins into leopard (or any print for that matter) storage containers using Mod Podge and decorative paper hand towels. As an option you can use chalkboard paint on the lids for labeling. I was motivated to make these after I saw similar ones in a catalog for over $35+. If you have made the Vera Bradley inspired pumpkins, or Battery Operated Candles you may already have the napkins on hand. If not they are easy to find at upscale home decorating stores or at www.casparionline.com

For This Project You Will Need:

Smooth Finish Tins (make sure they don't have a raised design). The larger one was from Walmart.

Decorative Paper Guest Towels: The leopard print napkins are by Caspari www.casparionline.com they have many great napkins. Use any print you love! You can also find them at high end home decorating stores. You only need 2-3 napkins per tin so you will have plenty leftover for your spare bathroom.

Mod Podge

White Spray Paint

Chalk Paint (optional) or Spray Paint to Paint your Lid if it is not a color you like

Scissors

Foam Brush or Paint Brush

Spray paint your tin white so no pattern shows through the decoupage. Optional: apply painters tape to the upper rim the lid goes onto so that stays metal.

Spray paint your lid with chalk board paint (optional). Or spray paint your lid any color you like. Many lids are already black and may not need painting.

Cover the inside of your tin so no spray paint gets on the inside

Trim the perforated border off of your paper napkin. You will be left with a rectangle.

Remove the inner white tissue lining.

Prepare a portion of your tin with a layer of Mod Podge.

Decide which direction you'd like your print to go. If you go vertically on the large you will need 3 napkins. Horizontally on the medium tin uses 2 napikns. If you want a set of canisters make sure you put the print in the same direction on each tin.

Do Not Mod Podge The Top Ring around the Tin where the lid goes onto. I did this by accident and it will make the lid fit too snugly.

Line up the tissue to just over the edge where the lid line is. You want the lid to cover the paper, but again you do not want to put the paper to the very top of the tin or the lid will be very snug. Also line up to where the seam of the tin is as a starting point.

Wrinkles are an issue we all struggle with doing Mod Podge. I like to pull the tissue in one direction slightly, and then the other direction. I find it is better to let the Mod Podge dry a little before smoothing out remaining wrinkles with the base of your palm. If you do it when it is very wet the tissue will rip. While it will never be perfectly smooth (nature of decoupage) I find it is less noticeable in a busy print like leopard, and definitely less after finishing with sealer.

When you need to join a seam try cutting your next tissue to match the pattern repeat. Try to have little, or no overlap, butting the two tissues together.

Apply a layer of Mod Podge over the seam.

Trim the excess off of the bottom of the tin when the paper is dry.

Apply a little Mod Podge around the bottom rim and push any excess edge under.

When dry apply a layer or two of Mod Podge to the tin base, or spray with a clear acrylic sealer (not the lid). Do not spray the upper rim where the lid goes

(I did first time by accident). If you get some paper or spray on the upper lid rim and it dries use coarse sandpaper to remove.

Holiday Tabletop Moss Topiaries

I know topiaries are not very crafting rebellious. I am somewhat of a contradiction. I like pink leopard, have bleached platinum hair, sport some tattoos, (you get the idea) and yet I like old school decorating like chinoiserie, and damask. I like that mix of old patterns and new ones, and I have always loved topiaries. I saw the paper mache deer at Michaels at 50% off and decided I would use them as topiary forms. I wanted an English garden look so I purchased a package of sheet moss, and figured with glue gun handy I would whip them up in no time flat. I soon discovered they were not very fast to complete (except the cone was pretty fast), and quite messy. You definitely want to create these in an area that can be cleaned up easily, or outside. The moss stinks, but luckily the smell fades. The topiaries were just as cute sitting on the tabletop before staked into planters, so that is definitely an optional step. I purchased LED ultra slim wire lights so they would be lit at night. The LED lights caused the project to get a little pricey, but they are definitely the way to go if you want your topiary lit. The wire and lights are so thin they blend in with the moss. Even after the mess and time involved I was pretty happy with the topiaries. If I see any other interesting paper mache animal form I may make another moss topiary in the future. Just not too soon as I am still sweeping up.

For this project you will need:

Paper mache topiary forms. I used holiday deer from Michael's $4.99 and a cone ($1.25) from their paper mache area.

Sheets of moss. I used a bag of sheet moss from Michael's labeled "Moss Table Runner"

Green spray paint (optional)

Hot Glue Gun

LED Ultra Slim Wire Light Set (optional) These battery operated lights are on very thin green wire and have a 6 hour timer. I used Martha Stewart and Starlite brands bought at Home Depot.

Floral Foam (optional) I found my foam blocks at The Dollar Tree

Stick (optional)

Container (optional)

Start by deciding if your paper mache animal needs any fixes to it. I felt the antlers were too short on the ones I purchased so I hot glued cut straws to make them longer.

Spray Paint green (optional). This is up to you. If you miss any moss it won't be as noticeable.

Cut strips of the moss sheet. Make sure the moss isn't folded over on itself. I had to pry two sheets apart a lot. Also remove any tissue paper attached to the back of the moss sheet.

Start hot gluing moss strips in sections. I noticed the glue dried so quickly that I couldn't do much larger than 4 or 5" strips.

Working like a puzzle keep cutting and matching the strips to fill in the form.

*The cone is the easiest topiary to make. Just cut and wrap a long piece of the moss sheet around the cone hot gluing as you go. Trim the excess.

When completed spray the forms with acrylic sealer. (optional) This is supposed to help hold the moss on, but it still will lose little bits when moved, even after the sealer.

If you would like your topiary potted go outside and find a nice stick. The cone can just be set onto a pot (no stick needed).

Cut a small hole in the bottom of the topiary and insert the stick.

Hot glue around the stick to keep it in place.

Use a block of floral foam in the bottom of a container to secure your topiary.

Cover with additional moss.

If you would like your topiaries lit, I recommend battery operated ultra thin wire lights. The cords the LEDs are on are thin green wire so they blend in with the topiaries. Plus they are on a 6 hour timer and will come on automatically every evening.

Start by wrapping the end of the light cord to the top of your topiary, so that you will end at the bottom of the topiary. Place the remote box behind the topiary or in the pot. Turn your lights on at the time you would like them to come on every evening. They will automatically turn off 6 hours later, and come back on the next evening.

Combine them with our Vera Bradley Inspired Battery Operated Candles Project for a nice glow.

2 Glitter Projects Made Without Glitter

I have a love/ hate relationship with glitter. I love all things sparkly, but glitter drives me nuts. I swear I always get some in my eye! I recently tried glitter tape for the first time on my Crazy Clips project and I found it to be easy to use. One roll also goes a long way, and covers a lot of clothespins. It is pricey however, at upwards of $6.00 a roll when not on sale. Remember to use your 40% off coupon on it.

I also wanted to try Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray. I had $1 chargers from Walmart and I found this spray worked beautifully on them. It's only downside is a fine glitter spray around your work area, so choose an area with that in mind. I bought green chargers so I tried both Citrus Dream, and Lucky Green. Lucky Green is a pretty traditional emerald green, while Citrus Dream is a golden, yellow green.

I decided since both of these projects are easy I would combine them into one post.

Sparkly Holiday Crazy Clips:

The basics are easy. Line up the tape on one side and adhere.

Trim the other side and ends.

Attach an embellishment with E6000 Glue. Use them as present toppers, bag clips, advent calendar clips, and or your holiday greeting cards display.

Products Used on the Sparkly Holiday Crazy Clips: I used Recollections Glitter Tape from Michael's. For embellishments I used Jolee's Boutique dimensional stickers.

The holly is from Walmart. It is called Holiday Confetti on the packaging. You get 36 in a pack for approximately $1.99. It was found by the cellophane bags in the holiday section by the garden center (not in crafts). Look by the gift wrapping area. Then find the little treat bags and boxes and look for it hanging up in that vicinity. It is labeled holiday Time brand "Confetti". It is like chipboard (not a sticker). I added small stick on red gems.

$1 Charger Redo You will Need:

Charger (I used $1 ones from Walmart)

Krylon Glitter Blast Glitter Spray (I tried Lucky Green and Citrus dream). Make sure you get the Glitter Blast (not their regular glitter spray). It will cover 6 chargers.

Clear Acrylic Sealer spray ( I used Mod Podge Matte clear acrylic sealer spray)

Work in a well ventilated area, and one that you will not mind a little glitter mist on.

Shake the can very, very well. At first I didn't get a good spray coming out, but it improved after shaking a lot.

Spray the top of your charger. Move quickly and with light spray strokes. This stuff can be drippy. If you get a drip just wipe with a paper towel, and when dry respray the area. Don't overspray. Set up an assembly line of your chargers so they all get quick, even coverage. When you start running out of the spray concentrate on the outer rims since that is what will be seen.

Spray a second coat if desired. I found one coat to be sufficient.

When fully dry spray a coat of clear acrylic sealer.

You will never have to worry about bringing coupons to their stores again. I use it all the time. Just click on the Michael's ap icon when you are in line. You can use the coupons more than once a week, it doesn't seem to limit the use. It is really nice to know you will always have current coupon handy at the touch of a button.

Punches for the Poinsettia are manufactured by The Punch Bunch (www.thepunchbunch.com) and their entire line of punches is available online from: www.scrappilyeverafter.com

Medium Snowflake Punch - 1 for the base of the poinsettia
Mega Giant Dahlia Petals Punch -for the leaves, 6 large, 4 medium, and 3 small for each flower

*Angel Peep Hole Tag From Jodie Berdiales:

I used a Nestibilities small scalloped oval die for the three layers (covered thin chipboard with patterned paper).

I free hand cut the tag, used my Crop-a-dile for the grommet hole.

The gold angel was applied using a stamp set from JoAnns, Versamark for embossing and Gold Embossing Powder (Stampendous) then heat set.

Merry Christmas stamp from Tim Holtz "Visual Artistry" collection.

Papers Used: K & Co.

Other: German trim (local vintage shop), angel charm, star and ribbon (Hobby Lobby).

*Elf Stocking Tag from The Rebel Crafter:

Cut the elf stocking using red velevet paper on the Cricut. I used the witch shoe from the Halloween cartridge "Happy Hauntings".

Cover tag with holiday paper and distress using cats eye charcoal.

Attach stocking to the tag with pop dots.

Attach glittery wire ribbon to the stocking top.

Attach stick on gems down the front of the stocking.

Print To/From labels on the printer. Cut out and attach with a pop dot.

Attach small foam candy cane stickers.

Attach a small jingle bell to the stocking toe with a glue dot.
